News: Chowrasta Market to get RM12m makeover

Feb 22, 2012 - PropertyGuru.com.my

The century-old Chowrasta Market will receive a RM12 million makeover set to start by the end of this year, its first upgrade since its facelift in 1961, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

According to The Sun, Lim said, "It will be GBI (Green Building Index) certified." As it integrates eco-friendly features, the facelift will also preserve the heritage kept by the three-storey building.

According to its records, the property was built in the 1870s, being the earliest one in Penang and is currently within the designated UNESCO heritage buffer zone. In 1920, a front portion was built, but was entirely rebuilt in 1961 the way it is now.

The records from the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) also indicate that the market features 240 lots on the first level, including 81 lots for sundry goods and 18 stalls for food and drinks. Occupancy rate stood between 30 percent and 40 percent.

Ong Jin Cheng, Director at Arkitek LLA, which will draw up the design plan, said that among the proposed changes will be the addition of a five-storey car park that can accommodate 150 cars. The interior will also be refurbished to address lighting and ventilation issues and escalators will be installed for mobility.

Ong added that the first floor will house areas where the public could pay their bills as well as engage in daily businesses.

"The upper levels will be transformed into a rooftop garden where produce can be grown and then sold downstairs," he said.

Meanwhile, Ang Aing Thye, Secretary of the MPPP, noted that the design is still at the conceptual stage, as the council will still heed feedback from stakeholders. It should be finished in three years' time, he said.
